Tip #7 – Include Others in Your Photo Trip Plans

Filed under: Zen — peppergroyne @ 11:19 am

On a recent family weekend getaway, I noticed a photo opportunity in the making. The subject was a great bridge in Stanthorpe and I really wanted to get a photo of a train crossing over the bridge. Research showed that a small number of steam train tours would cross that bridge in the following months so a trip was in the offing.

To ensure that the whole family had something to do, we coordinated a return trip to Stanthorpe and invited along additional family members (including cousins of my daughters) and made a weekend of it. This ensured that my kids had something to do, my wife wouldn’t be bored and (for the small period of time I needed) I could focus on my cameras and subject. As it was, my eldest niece was able to assist by taking some video footage of the train as it went past. After the bridge shoot, we all wandered round to Stanthorpe train station where we could all get up close and personal with the train and get some more shots of the wonderful machine. The weekend then flowed on naturally from there and there were more activities to partake of as well as sight-seeing to be done.

By being up front with the original intent and making sure what my main goal was, I was then able to let the rest of the family arrange their priorities for after my images were taken. This mean there was no pressure to ‘get on with it’ and no groans of ‘oh, not another photo’ which made for a less stressful weekend.
